Have you ever
listened to the
stories of nature?, 2023
Listened to nature (Tree) with different materials (pencils, brushes, lipsticks, etc.) connected to hear their stories, which are produced according to the natural environment, such as wind, rain, and sunlight in Chicago.
You can see drawings of nature that vary depending on different natural environments and materials in the same space.
It was inspired by the art of Tim Knowles, who mostly connects brushes to twigs to engrave their stories on canvas.
First, the photos are from a project I did in front of a lake in Chicago. On a rainy and windy day, I added acrylic on the brushes to tree branches and wrote their stories on mirror paper. As the branches swayed in the wind, a work of art was born, and we can feel that the fluttering tree branches we usually see are telling stories through this movement. Also, during the production process, people passing by took an interest in the work and shared their experiences, and their participation was also completed as part of this project. It was a unique experience to have a conversation between humans in front of nature, talking about the same topic in different languages.
Next, I listened to the stories of flowers and trees located on a road in Chicago. On a rainy day, I was able to capture their stories on the canvas by connecting ink pens. It was natural and beautiful, with ink spreading and leaves falling as it rained. The sounds of people on the road and at crosswalks, the sound of cars honking horns, and other sounds of nature blend together to create another image of human and natural beings together.
The last one is a project I made by experimenting with artificial nature in my dormitory. Instead of wind, I used a hair dryer, instead of rain, I used spray to replace nature, and instead of real plants, I used plastic plant models. In addition to stories about nature, I also wanted to hear stories about artificially created natural environments and nature, so I went through this process. I made the work using lipstick on canvas and a brush on thin Korean paper, and you can feel different shapes and pictures from real nature.
